Superintendent search on TCAPS agenda

TRAVERSE CITY — Traverse City Area Public Schools board members will consider contracting with a search firm to help find the district's next superintendent.

Board Vice President Gary Appel said four companies submitted bids to do the job, and the Michigan Leadership Institute came in the lowest at $7,500.

MLI is the same firm that brought the district outgoing Superintendent Stephen Cousins.

Appel said the firm's history, proposed recruiting schedule and price make them the best choice. He wants to see board members select a firm at their Monday evening meeting so recruiters can do some leg work before school board elections in November.

"We'll ask MLI to take those steps that would tee this up for the next board and not tie any hands," Appel said. "Some new board members will be coming in, and we want to make sure that the board controls the hiring of the superintendent so that there is alignment between the board and the person that they hire."

Board members also will vote Monday on a one-year interim superintendent contract for Paul Soma to begin July 1. He was named interim superintendent in May but does not have a specific contract in place.

"I think it's appropriate," board secretary Scott Hardy said. "I think we all agree that we need to give Paul the commitment and the resources to do this for the year so that he has the ability to move the district forward on the strategic plan. We didn't want him in limbo."

Board members also will hear budget presentations, and TCAPS likely will have a balanced budget going into the 2014-15 school year.

"Going into a new school year, this is probably the best financial position that we've had in my five years on the board," Appel said.

They'll also discuss reauthorizing the Greenspire School's public charter for the next five years.

The board meeting is Monday at 6 p.m. in the Tompkins Boardman Administration Center. It is open to the public.
