— TRAVERSE CITY — Two people are in custody after police believe they punched and beat two others with a baseball bat.

Traverse City Police officers were dispatched to the Whiting Hotel, 152 E. Front St., on Friday shortly before 1 a.m. on a report of an assault involving four men.

Police identified the suspects as a man from Williamsburg, 29, and a Traverse City teen, 17, who they said went to the Whiting Hotel to find an acquaintance. The person was not there, and two people at the Whiting asked them to leave, police said.

The suspects left. The victims went outside shortly afterward to smoke and the suspects attacked, police said. The men allegedly punched and beat them with a baseball bat, and also shattered glass on the hotel's front door.

The suspects drove off before police arrived. Officers located their vehicle in the 700 block of East Front Street. The men are lodged in the Grand Traverse County Jail on charges of felonious assault, malicious destruction of property over $250 and assault and battery.

Traverse City fire and North Flight personnel treated the victims for head lacerations.
