Bums beat Wild Things again

WASHINGTON, Pa. — The Traverse City Beach Bums set a franchise record Thursday night with a 5-3 win over the Washington Wild Things — the team’s eighth win in a row.

The Beach Bums had won seven games in a row in 2008 and 2012.

Traverse City snapped a 3-3 tie in the third on a strange play. Carlo Testa singled with one out, then on a 1-1 pitch to Zach Kometani, tried to steal second. Kometani swung at the pitch and hit the ball up the middle and it went through the legs of C. J. Beatty who was covering on the steal attempt. Testa raced around the bases to score the winning run.

The Beach Bums added an insurance run in the ninth on a D’Marcus Ingram home run. It was his first as a Beach Bum.

Washington had taken a 1-0 lead in the first on a Stewart Ijames home run. The Beach Bums responded with three in the second when Sean Gusrang belted a solo home run and Jose Vargas drilled a two-run double. Vargas came to the plate with the bases loaded after Jeremy Banks singled, Ryan Still was hit by a pitch and Ingram walked. The 3-1 lead was shortlived as Washington plated two in the bottom of the second on a two-run homer by Gus Benusa.

Mike Devine (1-1) picked up the win for Traverse City, allowing three runs in his five innings on the hill. Burny Mitchem and Nick Capito each tossed two innings of shutout ball in relief. Capito, who struck out four, earned the save.

The Beach Bums finished with eight hits. Vargas and Banks had two apiece.

Taylor Wrenn, who is on a 21-game hitting streak, did not play because of a right arm contusion. He was hit by a pitch in the first inning of Wednesday’s game.

Traverse City opens a three-game series tonight at Normal. Jake Sabol (5-1, 1.45) starts for the Beach Bums while Tyler Lavigne (1-2, 2.62) gets the call for the CornBelters.
