Former Titan GLIAC Athlete of Week

BIG RAPIDS — After posting back-to-back shutout victories last week, Ferris State freshman goalkeeper Savanna Wojtanowski (Traverse City West) was named the GLIAC’s Defensive Athlete of the Week.

Wojtanowski combined to make 14 saves in wins over Walsh and Malone, helping the Bulldogs improve to 5-4 overall and 4-2 in the GLIAC with identical 3-0 wins. The wins kept Ferris in second place in the league standings.

Wojtanowski has seen action in eight of the Bulldogs’ games this season, totaling 28 saves a .73 goals against average and a .848 save percentage in more than 600 minutes of action.

Patriot Game brings in $9,000

TRAVERSE CITY — About $9,000 was raised from the Patriot Game football matchup between Traverse City Central and Traverse City West, money that will go toward the Reining Liberty Ranch and to fund a veterans memorial at Thirlby Field.

The was the second year of the Patriot Game between West and Central, a contest that honors veterans, active military personnel and the local families of heroes who have been killed in Iraq and Afghanistan.

A ceremony preceded the game and included the unveiling of a giant flag on the field. All veterans and active military were invited on to the field. West won the contest in thrilling fashion, 17-14 in overtime.
