Dancers bring color to Corson stage at Interlochen

INTERLOCHEN — World renowned choreographer Moses Pendleton’s “Momix: Botanica” comes to Interlochen’s Corson Auditorium Wednesday.

Be prepared for an unfolding of the seasons unlike any you’ll see in northern Michigan when spring actually arrives on March 20.

A white rose recedes into the aurora borealis in the dead of winter and becomes a fantasy flower that tempts nymphs with snow pollen. Ballerinas in yellow-gold and red marigold skirts attract hornets in kinetic dance to an eclectic score ripe with birdsong and Vivaldi’s “Four Seasons.”

Worms turn the earth underground. Hornets mount a charge on an Indian summer turning into fall and back to winter.

Pendleton is considered one of America’s most inventive dance illusionists for his ability to weave and blend dance, acrobatics, gymnastics, costume, props, puppetry, music, lighting and humor into a mysterious, beautiful and often amusing visual tale.

“I’d love to be able to see into Pendleton’s dreams just one night, but dreams alone don’t make theater like this,” Philadelphia Inquirer reviewer Merilyn Jackson wrote in May 2012. “It needs imagination, an understanding of the laws of physics — inertia, centrifugal force, gravity, with, velocity — and the grit to work out the precision timing that keeps his dancers safe.”

Pendleton said he conceived “Botanica” as an herbal remedy for an ailing world.

He was one of several dancer-athletes who founded Philobus Dance Theater in Connecticut in 1971. He formed Momix in the early 1980s and has become one of the nation’s most widely performed choreographers and directors since then.

Wednesday night’s performance is the company’s third visit to Interlochen since 2004. It performed “Momix: Lunar Sea in 2007.

Momix: Botanica starts at 7:30 p.m. in Corson Auditorium. Tickets are $28 for adults, $25 for seniors and $9 for students. They can be purchased over the phone by calling the Interlochen box office at (800) 681-5920 or 276-7800. They also are available online at
