Torch area party

EASTPORT — The Upper Torch Lake Association invites the community to join them for a get-together on Monday, Dec. 9.

The event starts at 6 p.m. at the Torch Lake Township Hall, 2355 N. U.S. 31. Jeff Woolsey will provide music for mingling and dancing from 6-8 p.m. Instead of a potluck dish, attendees are asked to bring hors d’oeuvres or finger food to share and their own beverage. Napkins and plates will be provided. A voluntary donation of $5 per person will help cover expenses.

ISEA seminar

SUTTONS BAY — Tom Kelly, Inland Seas Education Association founder, will review the 2013 Schoolship season at the Tuesday, Dec. 10, Great Lakes Seminar.

The program starts at 7 p.m. at the ISEA Education Center, 100 Dame St. The public is welcome and no reservations are needed. Call 271-3077 or visit for details.

Musicale auditions

TRAVERSE CITY — The Grand Traverse Musicale will hold scholarship auditions in January for scholarships for band, orchestra, piano, voice, and guitar students in classical pursuit.

Students in grades six through 11 are eligible to audition for the scholarships, which are to be used for music lessons, camps or instruments.

The audition schedule is: Monday, Jan. 20, 4-8 p.m. for students in grades nine through 11; Tuesday, Jan. 21, 4-8 p.m. for students in sixth through eighth grade; and Saturday, Jan. 25, 10 a.m.-noon and 1-4 p.m. for students in ninth through 11th grade. All auditions will be held at the First Congregational Church, 6105 Center Road and are scheduled as applications are received.

Local author dies

LUDINGTON — Author and retired journalism professor Ronald Clair Roat has died at his Ludington home. He was 67.

The Ludington Daily News reports that Roat died Thanksgiving Day of natural causes.
