City police are searching for the driver of a dark SUV or pickup truck whom they believe struck and killed a Traverse City woman as she rode a bicycle early today near Washington and Railroad streets.
Police did not immediately identify the woman, 29. They said she was riding a bicycle on Washington Street sometime before 2 a.m. when she was struck from behind by the suspect's vehicle.
"It appears that the suspect vehicle left the main travel lane portion of the roadway and entered the side designated “parking” lane in which the victim was traveling and struck her from behind." Traverse City Police said in a press release. "The victim’s bicycle was thrown at the point of impact into the tree lawn and the victim became entangled with the vehicle that struck her. It appears that the victim was then dragged for 1 ½ blocks to the area where she was discovered by officers."
Police found the badly injured woman near the south alley in the 700 block of Washington Street.
She was taken to Munson Medical Center where she died.
Witnesses describe the vehicle that struck her as a dark SUV or pickup truck.
Accident investigators determined the victim was traveling on her bicycle in the 600 Block of Washington Street eastbound on the south side of the Washington Street, within 12 inches of the curb when she was struck by a vehicle traveling the same direction, police said.
City police seek the public's help in finding the hit-and-run driver.
