Federal money going to Benzie, Leelanau

WASHINGTON — Benzie and Leelanau counties will receive a total of $121,000 to offset property tax losses from nontaxable federal land within their borders.

They are two of the 29 counties Sens. Carl Levin and Debbie Stabenow announced Thursday that would receive a total of more than $4.1 million from the Interior Department.

Payments in lieu of taxes are determined by calculating each county’s total acres of federal land and population. Federal lands include national forests and parks. Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is located in both Benzie and Leelanau counties.

Benzie will receive $20,000 and Leelanau will receive $101,000.
