— TRAVERSE CITY — An annual ceremony to honor veterans has a new location this year.

More than 400 people are expected to attend a service Monday at the Grand Traverse Veterans Memorial Park. The ceremony begins at 10 a.m. at the park off 11th Street near Elmwood Avenue.

Grand Traverse Area Veterans Coalition president Neal Horning said the ceremony's location formerly rotated between Oakwood and Memorial Gardens cemeteries. This will be the first time members of local veterans organizations gather on Memorial Day at the veterans park, he said.

"The idea is we have our ceremony there. And then people can go to individual grave sites of their relatives," Horning said.

Hot dogs and refreshments will be provided afterward by the VFW, Horning said.

The weather for Monday's service and other events throughout the weekend should be pleasant and sunny, but not too hot. Forecasters from the National Weather Service in Gaylord predict highs in the 60s Saturday and Sunday. Temperatures are expected to reach the low 70s on Memorial Day.

People heading out of town across the state will dig into their wallets more than last year. The average price for gas is $3.94 a gallon, 20 cents higher than 2012. The good news is prices aren't expected to climb much higher, said Nancy Cain, spokeswoman for AAA of Michigan.

Gas in Traverse City is averaging $3.83 a gallon, according to AAA.

Michigan State Police are reminding drivers to buckle up and travel safely. Troopers this weekend will enforce the Combined Accident Reduction Effort safety initiative and Click It or Ticket seat belt enforcement campaign. Police will be alert for recklessness, drivers under the influence and drivers and child passengers in violation of the state's seat belt law.

Last year, three of 10 people who died in traffic crashes over Memorial Day weekend did not wear a seat belt, state police said.
