Benzie County home destroyed in fire

BEULAH — Fire destroyed a remote Homestead Township home.

Benzonia Township Fire Department Chief John Hanmer said units responded to the fire on Thursday at about 11 a.m. He said no one was inside the Cook Road home and the occupants were at work.

“It was at the end of a dead-end road and very treed-in,” he said. “Nobody could drive by and see it.”

Hanmer said someone eventually observed smoke. Firefighters from Benzonia and Frankfort townships had the fire under control in 35 minutes, but the home is considered a total loss.

Hanmer said the cause hasn’t been determined, but an electrical problem is suspected. The occupants — a husband and wife — are receiving aid from the American Red Cross.
