We can’t drink oil

The Jan. 5 Forum was a blatant industry whitewash of fracking’s significant impact on the future of our land and descendants. Not once was the destruction of five million gallons of fresh water each day per well mentioned.

Water is a finite commodity that will become monetized (highest bidder anyone?) if not protected as a human right, as a result of such waste, waste because industry secrecy prevents knowing what chemicals are used in the fracturing process. It is unrecyclable. But as the Traverse City Record-Eagle editorial that same day points out, companies have gotten away with pretending to recycle “brine” consisting of toxins thousands of ppm above allowable safe levels in our neighborhoods.

The Forum piece ignores the extreme risk to our one-fifth of the world’s fresh water by pushing heavy tar sands oil from fracking through a 60-year old, feeble pipeline never designed to carry such a thick product.

The rosy, expansive pictured in this piece is hardly responsible. They don’t care as they will be able to afford water. We cannot survive by drinking oil.
