No cause identified in 'suspicious' Mayfield blaze

BUCKLEY — A 57-year-old woman remains hospitalized after suffering injuries in a house fire in Mayfield Township, Grand Traverse County Undersheriff Nate Alger said. Kathy Jacobs lived at the 4680 Miller Road residence that burned, according to state records, and is listed in serious condition at Munson Medical Center.

A sheriff's deputy and county animal control officers investigated the deaths of six horses, including two miniature horses, on the property just one day before the fire. Alger said the continuing investigation hasn't yet identified a cause of the fire, and don't yet know how or if it's connected to the animals' deaths.

"We believe because of the circumstances behind the fire that it's suspicious (in) nature," he said.

Tom Buss, the county's director of environmental health, said the sheriff's department is handling the investigation into the horse deaths.
