Travel book names region top destination

The authors of Lonely Planet travel books have named western Michigan, including Traverse City, as their top travel destination for 2014.

The announcement focuses on the region of the state surrounding Grand Rapids, highlighting its natural beauty, cultural events and breweries. But it also mentions the Lake Michigan coastline that stretches from near Grand Rapids to the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.

A more comprehensive article by the authors outlines the northwest Michigan communities they believe are must-see destinations, including Traverse City.

The region beat out other destinations including Boston, Yosemite National Park and Las Vegas to take the top spot.
