Glass is Athlete of Year

From staff reports

TRAVERSE CITY — As honors go, this was a big one for Alisha Glass.

The former Leland and Penn State star was the named USA Volleyball Female Indoor Athlete of the Year. The announcement was made on the USA Volleyball Web site.

Glass, who is currently playing professional volleyball in Istanbul, learned of the honor over the weekend.

“She was very thrilled, very surprised to get the award,” said Laurie Glass, her mother and high school coach. “She had no idea.

“That’s a big honor. I’m thrilled and happy that all her hard work and dedication to USA volleyball was noticed and honored. It’s pretty awesome for northern Michigan to have a kid get that kind of recognition.”

Glass started the season by leading Team USA to the Pan American Cup gold medal. She started two of the three USA Volleyball Cup matches against Japan, registering 10.50 assists per set. Glass earned Best Setter at the FIVB World Grand Prix, averaging 9.81 assists per set. She led the U.S. to the NORCECA Women’s Continental Championship gold medal with averages of 10.25 assists, 2.08 digs and 0.58 blocks per set. During the season-ending FIVB World Grand Champions Cup, Glass led the U.S. to the silver medal with a 37.1 team kill percent. She ranked second in assists with 8.43 running sets.

“Our program’s biggest theme for 2013 was the commitment to learn, to grow and to pursue mastery relentlessly, and to support others doing the same; Alisha embraced and exemplified those notions,” U.S. Women’s National Volleyball Team head coach Karch Kiraly said on the team’s Web site. “In competition, she played a major role in leading our young group to battle – and to a series of hard-fought wins – against the world’s best.”

Glass, 25, will be home for a couple days over Christmas, then she’ll return to Istanbul.
