Volleyball: St. Francis reaches district finals

MAPLE CITY — Traverse City St. Francis rolled into the Class C district finals at Glen Lake with a convincing straight-game win over Lake City.

The Gladiators won 25-8, 25-6, 25-11.

"We played really well," SF coach Heather Simpson said. "They were just in sync. We have a couple players out with injuries and illness — and people stepped up."

The Gladiators were led by Bridgett Bussell (13 kills, five aces, five digs), Kaitlyn Hegewald (22 assists, three aces), Haley Bussell (seven kills, four digs), Madeline Rysztak (five aces, 25-25 serving) and Laura Kirchofer (seven digs, 14-14).

The Glads (37-7-3) play Manton in Saturday's noon district final. The Rangers won a five-game match with Elk Rapids, 25-19, 25-16, 20-25, 21-25, 15-9.


Class B at Cadillac Benzie Central      3 Mason Co. Central      0

Benzie won a battle of Centrals, topping Mason County Central 25-19, 25-22, 25-13 in district play at Cadillac.

The Huskies were paced by Molly Lehn (20 assists), Jenna Gauthier (15 kills), Madison Lutzke (10 kills, 10-10 serving), Autumn Hagelstein (four kills, five blocks) and Maggie Geetings (12-12 serving).

Benzie (37-8-17) plays Cadillac in the district final today at Cadillac.

Class B at Cadillac Cadillac      3 Kingsley      0

Cadillac moved on to the finals of the district its hosting with a 25-15, 25-12, 25-11 win over Kingsley.

The Stags were led by Katie Travis (10 kills, two blocks), Leah Hall (18 assists), Lindsey Weber (10 digs), Lilly Travis (four kills, six digs), Kenzie Meeker (four kills, 12 digs), Andrea Lee (three blocks) and Katie Garey (four digs).

Kingsley (45-11-7) set a school record this season with 96.7 serving for the entire season.

Class C at Boyne City Boyne City     3 Charlevoix     2

Boyne City outlasted Charlevoix in five games to win a Class C district championship on its own court.

The Ramblers won 25-16, 24-26, 25-23, 25-13, 15-10.

Boyne was led by Heather Nichols (38 assists, 5 aces), Kylie Hicks (24 kills, 22 digs, six blocks), Erin Baker (28 digs) and Rainy McCune (15 digs, eight kills).

The Ramblers (33-13-5) plays the winner of today's McBain-Pine River game in Tuesday's regional at TC St. Francis.

Class D at Alanson Pellston      3 Harbor Light      0

Pellston swept Harbor Light 25-7, 25-3, 25-8 in district play at Alanson.

The Hornets were led for the day by Victoria Rybinski (14 kills, three digs), Mackenzie Wright (six kills, four aces), Ember Hahn (five kills), Tori Kirsch (five kills, 7 aces), Abbie Welch (18 assists, five digs), Jentry Nielsen (four kills), Karly Smith (three kills), Megan Milbrandt (four aces) and Dana Zulski (eight digs).
