Vienna Boys Choir to sing in Interlochen

INTERLOCHEN — The Vienna Boys Choir is steeped in history.

The beloved and renowned choir began more than five centuries ago when Emperor Maximillan I requested six boys join his group of court musicians. Until 1918 when the monarchy ended, the choir sang exclusively for the court.

In 1921, financial circumstances dictated that the choir expand their audience, so they donned sailor suits, the fashion of the day, and began giving concerts around the world.

Today the Vienna Boys’ Choir is still going strong, with some 100 boys from the ages of 10 to 14 divided into four choirs. They put on around 300 concerts a year in front of nearly half a million people.

Their travels take them around the world, to Europe, Asia, Australia and the Americas.

On Wednesday, March 20, the choir will be making its third stop at Interlochen Center for the Arts.

They will entertain the audience with a wide repertoire of music that encompasses Austrian folk songs and waltzes, classical masterpieces, beloved pop songs, holiday favorites and medieval chant.

“We're thrilled to welcome one of the world's oldest and best-loved musical institutions to Interlochen Center for the Arts,” said Maureen Michaels, marketing manager. “The members of the Vienna Boys Choir are truly gifted musicians with voices of unforgettable beauty.”

The choir will perform at 7:30 p.m. in Corson Auditorium on the school’s campus.

Tickets are $28 for adults, $25 for seniors, and $9 for students.

Order tickets online at or contact the box office at 1-800-861-5920 or 231-276-7800.
