Mexican food at the mall

Jinetes is open, now serving alcoholic drinks

TRAVERSE CITY — Jinetes Mexican restaurant is now open behind MC Sports at the Grand Traverse Mall complex.

Part of a larger family of restaurants with different names including El Rancho in Ludington, Jinetes focuses on serving up family recipes and margaritas in a fun atmosphere. The manager, Javier Bernal, is Mexican, as are the cooks.

"This is authentic Mexican food," Bernal said.

The menu is extensive, including staples like tacos, burritos, enchiladas and fajitas. Jinetes also offers salads, shrimp and even a few pieces of American fare.

Jinetes didn't have a liquor license when they first opened, but acquired one two weeks ago. With it came a variety of margaritas, daiquiris, beer, wine and, of course, tequila. When the liquor came, so did more diners.

"Business has been picking up," Bernal said. "The liquor is a big draw, most people drink margaritas and beer."

Jinetes is open at 11 a.m. daily, until 10 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 10:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 9 p.m. Sunday, 3480 S. Airport, Suite E, Traverse City; 935-3620.
