Cottage Books will welcome author
GLEN ARBOR -- Jonathan P. Hawley will give a program on and sign his new book tonight at the Cottage Book Shop.
Hawley is a full-time Frankfort resident and vice president of the Friends of Point Betsie Lighthouse. His primary responsibility is to research and interpret the 150-year-old site's history. His book is titled "Point Betsie: Lightkeeping and Lifesaving on Northeastern Lake Michigan."

Song of the Lakes performs art park
THOMPSONVILLE -- Song of the Lakes will appear tonight at Michigan Legacy Art Park.
The group's newest project has been writing music to the classic 1941 children's book "Paddle to the Sea." The book tells the story about a small canoe carved by an Indian boy that makes a journey from Lake Superior to the Atlantic Ocean.
The evening will include a special boat art project that children can take home offered at 6:30 p.m. or after intermission. Song of the Lakes will perform eight original songs written to accompany the book starting at 7 p.m. and also will introduce "The Lumberjack" dance.

Public invited on a Twilight Art Walk
LELAND -- Twelve art establishments in Leland will welcome visitors tonight during Leland's first Summer Twilight Art Walk.
The walk will take place from 5 to 9 p.m. The Brenda J. Clark Gallery, M. Frey Studio, Fishtown Pottery, Main Street Gallery, Aurora Borealis Designs Studio, Benjamin Maier Ceramics, Reflections Art Gallery, the Art of Roxanne, B.B. Richards, Becky Thatcher Designs, Niki's Harbor Fare and Two Fish Gallery will participate.

Art exhibit opens with reception
GLEN ARBOR -- A reception for artist Peggy Hawley will open an exhibit featuring her view of northern Michigan's land and waterscapes.

Meet creators of youth book series
TRAVERSE CITY -- The author and the illustrator of the Mick Morris Myth Solver and the new Ghost Board Posse book series will make an appearance at UpNorth Kids.
Author Karen Bell-Brege and illustrator Darrin Brege, who also is the original Michigan and American Chillers cover artist, will be at the children's store on East Front Street from noon to 2 p.m. on Saturday. They will be passing out bookmarks and free stretchy aliens with every purchase.
Musical medicine to 'cure what ails ya'
FRANKFORT -- The Betsie Bay Inn's "Summerfest of Music" will continue with a dose of musical medicine provided by Mustard's Retreat.

Arts Council will sponsor paint outs
BELLAIRE -- Outdoor painting and sketching events will be offered in July and August at scenic locations in Antrim County.
Paint Outs will meet from 1 to 4 p.m. on July 27 and Aug. 31 under the direction of Peter Balestrieri. The events are sponsored by Parkside Arts Council.

Art Fair under the pines at NMC
TRAVERSE CITY -- The Traverse Bay Outdoor Art Fair will feature 120 artists and craftspeople exhibiting their work under the pines on the campus of Northwestern Michigan College.
This is the 48th year that the Artcenter Traverse City has hosted the event, which will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 26, rain or shine. In 2007, approximately 4,000 art lovers enjoyed the fair.
Annual 'Paint Out' challenges artists
PETOSKEY -- Artists of all levels are invited to venture outdoors to paint in the Petoskey area during the Crooked Tree Arts Center's "Paint-Out."
Artists will meet at 8 a.m. on Aug. 2 at the art center, 461 E. Mitchell St., or at the parking lot of the Pier Restaurant in Harbor Springs to have their canvases or paper stamped to verify that the material they will be painting on was blank when they started. After they sign in, artists can venture anywhere in the area for a day of plein air painting. Artists must be at least 18 years old and completed artwork must be returned, framed and ready to hang, between 4 and 6 p.m. that same day. A wine and cheese reception at 6 p.m. will celebrate the art created during the event.

Art park fundraiser is July 25
THOMPSONVILLE -- The annual fundraiser for the Michigan Legacy Art Park is scheduled for Friday, July 25.
The evening includes guided tours of the art park, local wine and beer tasting, children's activities and a silent auction. Michigan Legacy Art Park features more than 40 sculptures along hiking trails that cover 30 acres of wooded hills. It is at Crystal Mountain and open daily from dawn to dusk.
Following the cookout dinner, Shout Sister Shout will perform. Rachel David and musicians from Steppin' In It will play jazz from the 1930s and '40s, including classics from Nat King Cole and Sarah Vaughan.
The dinner begins at 6 p.m., with the concert to follow. Tickets to the fundraiser are $22 for adults, $10 for children and $55 for a family for dinner and concert admission. Reservations are required and tickets must be purchased by Tuesday.
Admission to the concert only is $8 for adults, $5 for children and $20 for a family, no reservation required.
