We are Michigan's road and street motorcyclists. We share the streets and highways of this state with you. We are out early in the morning, and late at night, however you will see us mostly during the daylight hours.
As we ride, we pass your driveway or we're at the corner store. At night we are in the oncoming lane with only one headlight. At intersections, you will find us turning right, left or going straight through. We are larger than a bicycle, but we are smaller than an automobile.
We are at your mercy at all intersections, so before you complete your turn, make sure we are not traveling straight through. Please take an extra look for us in the oncoming lane, as that is where most motorcyclists are injured or killed when accidents occur.
When turning right after a stop on a red light, please make sure you are not turning into our path. When preparing to pass on the highway, please look ahead to ensure that a motorcycle is not coming towards you in the lane ahead of the vehicle that you are passing.
As motorcyclists, we must be properly trained and licensed, including a motorcycle endorsement. It is important to practice defensive driving techniques and ensure that our motorcycles are operated within the rules of the road.
Riding a motorcycle requires the operator to be aware of all the conditions surrounding the vehicle. Motorcyclists should use extreme caution at intersections, always being prepared to take corrective action if necessary.
Motorcyclists should avoid the use of alcohol before and during the operation of the motorcycle, as its effects can reduce coordination, alertness and the ability to react to situations.
Above all, it is important that the rider and any passenger wear the proper protective riding apparel, including a safety helmet meeting U.S. Department of Transportation standards. The motorcycle should also be maintained in top operating condition. Riders should also be properly trained in the operation of the motorcycle and understand defensive driving practices. Riders must have a cycle endorsement on their driver's license to legally operate a motorcycle unless operating with another endorsed rider while in possession of a temporary instruction permit.
As supporters of highway safety, the motorcyclists of this state are asking that you please get in the habit of looking for us as you drive. We are your neighbors, your friends and your families. Together we can share the road safely.
