Recipe of the Week: Apple Dessert Cake

This week’s recipe comes from Sally DeWeese of Traverse City.

DeWeese says her mother made the recipe often during the fall months and everyone loved it.

Apple Dessert Cake

1/3 c. shortening

2/3 c. sugar

1 egg

3/4 t. vanilla

11/2 c. cake flour

21/2 t. baking powder

1/4 t. salt

1/2 c. milk

Combine the first four ingredients and mix well. Then continue to add the ingredients in order and mix. In a greased eight-by-eight-inch baking pan melt 3 tablespoons of butter and add a 1/2 cup of brown sugar and 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon. Slice a bed of baking apples into the bottom of the pan and pour the batter over top.

Bake at 375° for 25 to 30 minutes. Check with a toothpick to make sure the apples are done.
