— Oryana offers grant

TRAVERSE CITY — Oryana Natural Foods Market is accepting applications from area nonprofit organizations for its Community Grant.

Applicants must be a non-profit based in one of the following counties: Antrim, Benzie, Charlevoix, Grand Traverse, Kalkaska, Leelanau, Manistee, Missaukee and Wexford.

Organizations who have been awarded Oryana’s Community Grant within the last three years do not qualify.

Applications will be reviewed based on additional criteria (listed on the application).

Last year, Oryana member-owners awarded $5,500 to Grow Benzie, a community non-profit farmstead whose mission is to enrich the lives of Benzie County residents by fostering self-reliance through education in agriculture, nutrition, job training and life skills.

Cheese-making workshop

EAST LANSING — Michigan State University Extension will offer an artisan cheese-making workshop March 4-6.

The three-day class is designed for people who have never made cheese before and for those who want to improve their skills.

The workshop serves as a hands-on opportunity for participants to make cheeses in an educational environment. John Partridge, associate professor in the Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition and dairy food Extension specialist; G. William Robb, retired MSU Extension Ottawa County district dairy educator; and Barbara Jenness, of Dogwood Farm, will lead the courses.

The workshop takes place at the MSU Dairy Plant, 135 S. Anthony Hall, East Lansing. A registration fee of $450 per person covers tuition, resource material handouts, all workshop supplies, lunches and refreshments for all three days. Class size is limited to 20 participants.
