TRAVERSE CITY — Higher Grounds Trading Co. launched a new line of coffees in response to the struggles Michigan faces and in an effort to give back to the larger Michigan community.
Michigan Coffees for Change are four custom blends for four Michigan nonprofits that work for the health of the state.
Michigan BOLD, a velvet-smooth blend of Central and South American coffees with nuances of cocoa and spice, supports the Michigan Land Use Institute in sustaining cities, farms and beaches. Michigan STRONG, a blend of Central American coffees with sage, herb and smoke nuances, supports Traverse Bay Children's Advocacy Center in child sexual and physical abuse prevention and intervention. Michigan BRIGHT, a blend of African and South American coffees with malt, citrus and honey nuances, supports Focus Hope, which works to overcome racism and poverty. Michigan SMOOTH, a blend of Central and South American coffees with cashew, maple and cream nuances, supports Gleaners Community Food Bank, which provides foods to pantries, emergency kitchens and shelters.
A 12-oz. bag of coffee sells for $12 at the Higher Grounds Coffee Bar; $5 from the sale of every bag goes directly to the organizations. A percentage of sales from coffees sold at Oryana Natural Foods Market, Tom's Food Markets, Oleson's Food Stores, speciality grocers and gift stores also will go to the organizations.
