---- — Vasa Pasta Dinner

TRAVERSE CITY — Traverse City Central and West Senior high schools’ Nordic ski teams will host a Vasa Pasta pre-race dinner Friday at Timber Ridge Resort, 4050 Hammond Road East.

The meal will be served from 5-8 p.m. in the banquet facility adjacent to the Vasa Race packet pick-up in the main lodge. The cost is $10 for adults and $5 for children ages 12 and younger. This is an annual fundraiser for both Nordic ski teams.

Cottage Coffee

TRAVERSE CITY — Susan Wischman, community outreach coordinator at Munson Medical Center, will be the guest speaker at the Feb. 11, Cottage Coffee Series.

Wischman’s program, “Advanced Care Planning: The 5 Wishes,” will start at 10 a.m. at Hawthorn Cottage. The program is free and open to the public. For details, call 932-3027 or visit

Mushroom hunt

EAST JORDAN — Mushroom hunters are invited to join W.E.E.D.S. (Wild Edibles for Ecological & Dietary Sustainability), a local foraging group, to hunt for chaga mushrooms or tinder conk.

The mushroom hunt starts at 1 p.m. Feb. 15. Participants will learn about Chaga’s medicinal potentials, its ecology, identification and preparation. Chaga tea and a few wild edible snacks will be provided. Participants should bring snowshoes or skis.

Chili cook-off and more

TRAVERSE CITY — Christ United Methodist Church invites the community to its Presidents’ Day Weekend event.

Festivities will be hosted from noon-2 p.m. Feb. 16, at the church, 1249 Three Mile Road. There will be a chili cook-off, a silent auction, a cookie walk sale and a craft sale. The cost for the chili lunch is $5 for adults and $3 for children. Call the church, 946-3048, or visit to learn more.

Picnic at the Opera

TRAVERSE CITY — The Picnic at the Opera series continues Wednesday, Feb. 12, at the City Opera House, 106 E. Front St.

The live variety show will be hosted from noon-1 p.m. Miriam Pico is the host and WTCM FM’s Jamie Kramer co-hosts. The musical guest is Brett Mitchell, and students from West Senior High School will preview the musical “Thoroughly Modern Millie.” Kristy Avery is the guest visual artist and a fashion show will feature items from What to Wear. The show also features poetry commentary by Michael Delp and keyboardist David Chown.

Admission is free and the audience may bring sack lunches. Donations to support the Opera House also are appreciated. The show will be broadcast live on UpNorth TV cable channels 97 and 992 and streamed live on Recorded episodes will repeat each week on the cable channels and will be available on demand at the website.
