SCOTTVILLE — First-time or returning students at West Shore Community College are invited to student orientation on Thursday, Aug. 29.
Orientation starts at 6 p.m., in the Arts and Sciences Center and Center Stage Theater. Students interested in extra-curricular activities are encouraged to arrive by 5:30 p.m. Orientation includes a student panel and a "Meet the Professors" segment. A number of academic departments and faculty also will be available to answer questions.

Bellaire Bridge Walk
BELLAIRE — The community is invited to join the Friends of the Bellaire Library for a Labor Day Bridge Walk to promote children's literacy.
Walkers will meet at the gazebo at Richardi Park at 10 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 2, to walk the three bridges in Bellaire. Donations will be accepted to support the library's children's reading programs. Refreshments will be provided. For details, call the library, 533-8814.
Labor Day picnic
NORTHPORT — The Leelanau County Democratic Party will hold its annual Labor Day Picnic on Monday, Sept. 2.
The picnic will start at 2 p.m. at Peterson Park. Tom Stobie, superintendent of Frankfort Schools and Democratic candidate for Michigan's 101st District, will be the guest speaker. Attendees are asked to bring a dish to pass.
Opera House adds show
TRAVERSE CITY — Aziz Ansari, one of the biggest stars in the comedy world, will perform on Tuesday and Wednesday, Sept. 3-4, at the City Opera House, 106 E. Front St.
Ansari was on the cover of Rolling Stone's special comedy issue labeling him "the funniest man under 30." He also portrays government employee Tom Haverford on NBC's comedy series "Parks and Recreation" and was the host of the 2010 MTV Movie Awards.
Ansari's all-ages show starts at 7 p.m. each night. Tickets are $30 each and available at www.cityoperahouse.org. There is a four-ticket limit.
Yoga fundraiser for TART
TRAVERSE CITY — Yoga for Health Education (YHE) in the Center for Conscious Living at the Grand Traverse Commons will offer 22 “almost free” classes on Wednesday, Sept. 4, to benefit the TART Trails.

Baby of the Year contest
TRAVERSE CITY — Grand Traverse Area Students for Life are accepting applications for the 18th annual Baby of the Year Contest. The entry deadline is Thursday, Sept. 5.
