TRAVERSE CITY — Musical blockbusters “Les Miserables” and “The Sound of Music” and dramatic classic “Steel Magnolias” headline the 2013-14 season at Old Town Playhouse.
The curtain opens in October with an extended run of “Les Miserables,” one of the playhouse’s most ambitious undertakings. The Claude-Michel Schönberg and Alain Boublil work set in post-revolution France is the world’s longest-running musical.
Other MainStage productions include “It’s a Wonderful Life, the Live Radio Play” in December, “The Game’s Afoot” in January, “The Sound of Music” in March and “Steel Magnolias” in May. Studio Theatre productions are “The Dining Room,” “Venus in Fur,” “A Steady Rain” and “Leaving Iowa.”

GLEN ARBOR — The June Roundup Roadshow will be taped Saturday, June 15, at Cherry Republic.
The show starts at 3 p.m. and will air on Interlochen Public Radio. Host band Sour Mash will welcome singer/songwriter Dennis Palmer, bluegrass band Cabin Fever, and spoken-poetry group the Beach Bards. In addition, the Roundup Repertory Players will go to the ball park.

Kids fish free
TRAVERSE CITY — All area children, accompanied by an adult, are invited to the Kids Free Fishing Day on Saturday, June 15.
The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Northwestern Michigan College’s Great Lakes Campus, 715 E. Front St. Fishing rods, reels and bait will be provided. Children also are welcome to bring their own gear and bait or lure. Volunteers will be on hand to register anglers, help with fishing instructions and clean the fish caught. Free food and refreshments will be available and the Great Lakes Children’s Museum will offer a fish painting activity.
TRAVERSE CITY — The TC Scoop Festival on Saturday, June 15, will benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwestern Michigan.
The event will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at F & M Park. There will be ice cream and food from Moomer’s, Blue Bunny Novelties, Maui Wowi Hawaiian Coffees & Smoothies, Culver’s, Prairie Farms, Jimmy Johns, Great Lakes Potato Chip Co., Sam’s Club and Aunt Millies. Children’s activities include face painting, balloon art, bocce ball and more. Tickets at the event are four for $5; free for children 6 and younger who receive two tickets, and a $20 family price that includes 16 tickets. Additional tickets are $1 each.
TRAVERSE CITY — The Toxic Cherries and the Cherry Bombs will appear in a flat track roller derby double header on Saturday, June 15.
The doors open at 5 p.m. and the first whistle blows at 6 p.m. at the Grand Traverse County Civic Center. Tickets are $10 in advance or $15 at the door. Admission is free for children 10 and younger.
