Traverse City — Families with children ages 3 to 5 can learn more about Traverse City Area Public Schools preschool options at a Preschool Enrollment Fair Saturday, Feb. 9.
The fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Eastern Elementary School, 1600 Eastern Ave. Families also may register their preschool children in any TCAPS tuition-based preschool program for the 2013-14 school year. Representatives from each TCAPS preschool program will be on hand to answer questions and help with registration.
To complete registration at the fair, families must provide a copy of the child's birth certificate, health insurance information, completed registration forms, registration fees and the first week's tuition.

Traverse City — General Education Development (GED) testing will be offered at Central High School for individuals 18 and older who wish to complete high school equivalency requirements.
The next test dates are Feb. 11-12. Participants must register at the Central High School principal's office, 1150 Milliken Dr., prior to the test date. To take the complete test, participants must be able to attend both dates. A government-issued photo ID is required.
The current cost is $100 (cash or money order) due at registration; $20 for individual tests including retakes. In March, fees go up to $125 and $25.

Pom clinic for girls
Traverse City — Central High School's Cheer and Dance teams will offer a Junior Pom Clinic Saturday, Feb. 2, for girls in first through fifth grades.
The clinic will be held from 9 to 11:30 a.m. in the CHS gym, 1150 Milliken Dr. Registration opens at 8:30 a.m. Participants will perform with the CHS Pom Team at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 5, during halftime of the CHS JV basketball game. A short parent meeting will be held at the start of the clinic to provide game-day information.

Vasa ski races
Traverse City — Registration is under way for the 37th annual North American Vasa Ski Races.
The event will be held Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 9-10, at Timber Ridge Resort on Hammond Road. Registration and packet pickup for preregistered skiers is noon-9 p.m. Friday, Feb. 8, at Timber Ridge. An all-you-can-eat pasta meal will start at 5:30 p.m.

ACT test prep class
Traverse City — Northwestern Michigan College will offer two ACT Test preparation courses.
The classes are designed to help familiarize students with the test, provide practice, build confidence and reduce test anxiety.
One class meets 6-9 p.m. five Tuesdays, Jan. 29 to Feb. 26, in room 101 at NMC's Great Lakes Campus, 715 E. Front St. The cost is $265.
A four-week option starts Tuesday, Feb. 5. The cost is $235

ER Awards dinner
Elk Rapids — The Elk Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce is offering all community organizations the opportunity to participate in the Community Wide Awards Dinner. Organizations that wish to present an award at the dinner have until Thursday, Jan. 31, to notify the chamber.

Help filing FAFSA
Traverse City — Northwestern Michigan College's Student Financial Services staff will offer help filing a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on Fridays, Feb. 1-22.

Event for women
Traverse City — The Women's Winter Tour, a celebration of women, winter and chocolate, returns to its Traverse City roots on Sunday, Feb. 3.
The noncompetitive cross country skiing and snowshoeing event will be held on the Leelanau Trail. Participants will be transported by shuttle between 9 and 11:30 a.m. from the Holiday Inn West Bay in Traverse City to starting points along the route. The route ends at Black Star Farms for food samples, coffee and more. Shuttles back to Traverse City will be available 10 a.m.-2 p.m. from Black Star Farms.

Manistee — Manistee residents suffering from gastroesophageal reflux disease now have an alternative to daily medications to treat chronic heartburn.
Transoral Incisionless Fundoplication (TIF), an incisionless surgical solution, is being offered by West Shore Medical Center general surgeons. A program on reflux disease and treatments including the TIF procedure will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 1, in classrooms 1 and 2 in the Education Center at West Shore Medical Center, 1465 E. Parkdale Ave.
