Larger-than-usual Traverse Symphony coming to Corson

TRAVERSE CITY — The Traverse Symphony Orchestra promises musical fireworks when it performs Jan. 27 at 3 p.m. in Interlochen's Corson Auditorium.

The intermissionless concert will feature more than 75 musicians — 10 or 15 more than usual, said Krista Cooper, TSO interim executive director. The program includes Bernstein's "Candide Overture," Rossini's "William Tell Overture" Debussy's "Claire de Lune" Gershwin's "An American in Paris" and Ravel's "Bolero."

"It's kind of a short-pieces-everyone-knows, blow-you-out-of-your-seat program," said Kelsey Lauer, TSO office and box office manager.

Also featured: a special brass fanfare in honor of Edward Downing, retired TSO executive director and former president of Interlochen Center for the Arts. The orchestra recently received $10,000 in gifts in Downing's name to underwrite its brass section for the remainder of the season, Cooper said.

"Ed was a high school band director prior to his ICA days, so we thought it would be an appropriate link," she said. "And besides, it's so much fun to do a brass fanfare."

The program also includes three polkas by Austrian composer Johann Strauss II, who was born near Vienna. The Austrian capital is the destination of a spring trip being raffled off by the TSO with the help of Passageways Travel. The excursion for two includes airfare, hotel accommodations and tickets to see TSO conductor Kevin Rhodes lead a Vienna State Opera performance of the "Don Quixote" ballet.

Cooper said the raffle is one of several "extra initiatives" being conducted in conjunction with an annual campaign to raise $330,000 for the TSO and its programs. Only 250 tickets will be sold at $250 each. The winning ticket will be drawn at the orchestra's March 17 "Guys and Dolls" performance at Corson Auditorium, though the winner need not be present.
