"The cashier said she was two ahead of me in line so I have no idea who it was who made my day," Nancy wrote.
Traverse City Area Public Schools would like to acknowledge Hagerty Insurance and its staff for their generosity during the holiday season.
The local business donated baskets filled with books, crafts and more to each TCAPS elementary school. In total, 65 students received gift baskets and their parents received a gift card to further help the families during the holidays.
The Hagerty Cares Program has provided surprises to so many children and families within TCAPS over the years and thanks are owed to Hagerty Insurance and their generous staff for sponsoring the boxes and to the Hagerty Cares Program Coordinator Katherine Marciniak-DeGood for her efforts, a letter from TCAPS said.
The Ryan Dobry Diabetes Charity closed 2012 with grants to a number of area organizations.
The charity works to educate the public about diabetes and helps fund some of the medical needs of those with diabetes in northern Michigan who are under- or uninsured.
Grant recipients include the Traverse Health Clinic, Munson Medical Center Diabetes Education Program, Cadillac Mercy Diabetes Education and the Cadillac Area Free Clinic. Also receiving funds were the Manistee Area Community Clinic and the Grayling Ausable Free Clinic.
Over the years, the charity has donated more than $200,000 in money and supplies to area hospitals, clinics and to those in need who cannot afford to pay for all the expenses of the disease.
Winners of the fourth annual Traverse City Lions Club raffle drawing were: first prize, J.E. Balfour, Traverse City; second prize, Betty Smith, Kingsley; and third prize, Connie Leach, Traverse City.
Cherryland Cares, a subsidiary of Cherryland Electric Cooperative recently donated more than $10,000 to area nonprofit organizations.
Cherryland Cares is a volunteer, five-member board that funds nonprofit agencies in the six-county area that Cherryland Electric serves. Money for the fund comes from Cherryland members who choose to round up their bills to the nearest dollar. The board made $91,000 in awards to area nonprofits in 2012.
Receiving fourth-quarter Cherryland Cares awards were: Paperworks Studio, $3,500; Justice for Our Neighbors, $3,550; Benzie Area Christian Neighbors, $2,500; and the Grand Traverse Dyslexia Association, $500.
