YMCA basketball

Traverse City — The Grand Traverse Bay YMCA is offering a variety of basketball programs for all ages and abilities.

There are programs for preschool children, elementary and middle school girls and boys, plus adult leagues for both men and women. The Y is located at 3000 Racquet Club Dr., off South Airport Road. For details, visit www.gtbayymca.org or call 933-9622.

MHA crew training

Traverse City — The Maritime Heritage Alliance is taking registrations for its winter basic crew training.

The training program prepares adults 18 years and older to sail as deckhands on the Maritime Heritage Alliance's Schooner Madeline and Sloop Welcome. Sessions include classroom presentations and hands-on skill training exercises and will be held Jan. 24, Feb. 7 and 28, and March 7 and 28, at the CenterPointe Auditorium and the MHA workshops, both on South West Bay Shore Drive. A training fee is charged. Onboard training begins in June.

Scholarship apps

Traverse City — The Community Foundation is taking scholarship applications from child care providers seeking professional development or continuing education.

Funds are available from the newly established Child Care Connections (formerly 4C) Fund, which was created to continue to promote and strengthen quality child care in Antrim, Benzie, Charlevoix, Emmet, Grand Traverse, Kalkaska, Leelanau, Manistee, Missaukee and Wexford counties.

Funding is for private home-based daycares and private and tuition-based child care centers. Priority will be given to providers who do not have other means of funding available to them. Awards of up to $2,000 per individual will be considered.

Scholarship applications are accepted on an ongoing basis and will be reviewed at least quarterly. For details, complete application information, and to apply, visit www.4good4ever.org.

Aikido classes

Traverse City — Aikido instructor Katherine (Roo) Heins has opened a Traverse City-based aikido dojo, Northwest Michigan Aikikai, and is accepting students.
