'People and the Olive' premieres

Film will screen at Garden Theater Thursday

FRANKFORT — "The People and the Olive," a film that documents the February 2012 Run Across Palestine, will premiere at the Garden Theatre Thursday, Dec. 13, at 7 p.m.

Six Americans, including three from Benzie County, set out to run 129 miles in five days across the West Bank of Palestine to raise awareness about the struggles of Palestinian fair-trade olive farmers. The run was organized by the Traverse City-based nonprofit organization On the Ground, which works to support sustainable community development in farming regions across the world.

A media team joined them and created a daily Web series that told the story of the farmers. The videos led to the feature-length documentary, which includes the music of world-renowned musicians such as Al Andalus Ensemble, Souad Massi and Joshua Davis (a main character in the film), among others.

The doors open at 6 p.m. with an olive oil tasting, wine and mead tasting with St. Ambrose Cellars, fair-trade product stocking stuffers available for purchase, and Charlie's Natural Food Market with more fair-trade products.

Joshua Davis will go on stage at 7 p.m. with songs from the upcoming album, "A Miracle of Birds," inspired by the run. Following the film, Aaron Dennis and runners from the project will answer questions. An afterglow will be hosted at The Cabbage Shed in Elberta, with Joshua Davis continuing the show.

Tickets are $10 and are available at Charlie's. For more information, call 668-1010.
