Blues performer hits Williamsburg

Hicks began performing at the age of 4

WILLIAMSBURG — Blues guitarist/vocalist Rick Hicks will perform at Kelly's Williamsburg Theater on Thursday, Dec. 6, from 9 to 11 p.m.

Hicks began performing at age 4 when his gospel-singing, guitar-playing father bought him a plastic toy guitar for Christmas. By the age of 6, he could plunk out several tunes, and by age 12, he was performing with his church choir.

"Music has always been my favorite hobby, be it gospel, jazz or blues," he said.

Hicks has performed, recorded and traveled to Italy with Grammy-nominated jazz vocalist Betty Joplin. His Rick Hicks Band has opened for acts that include Spyro Gyra, Gladys Knight, Bobby Blue Bland, the Gap Band, James Brown, Kool & the Gang, The Spinners, the Isley Brothers and L.L. Cool J.

At Kelly's Williamsburg Theater, Hicks will present an evening of blues, funk, soul, jazz, Motown and rhythm and blues. Tickets are $10, available at the door.
