Cookies and candy

Acme — Feast of Victory Lutheran Church will hold a Christmas Cookie Sale on Sunday, Dec. 9.

Sale hours are 1 to 3 p.m. at the church, 4400 Mt. Hope Road. Shoppers can pick from traditional Christmas cookies, baked goods, and candy. Proceeds benefit the church's youth ministries.

Candle lighting

Traverse City — The Grand Traverse Chapter of The Compassionate Friends invites the public to a Memorial Candle Lighting on Sunday, Dec. 9, at Central United Methodist Church, 222 Cass St.

The event includes a gathering at 6:30 p.m. and the candle lighting at 7 p.m. Refreshments will be served.

Attendees may bring a framed photo of their child or sibling for a picture table. Candles will be furnished and music will be provided by the Munson Harpists.

Catholic book store

Traverse City — The Society of St. Vincent de Paul has opened the only Catholic book and gift store in Traverse City. The store is located inside its current location at 1207 Woodmere Ave. For details, visit

Free to veterans

TRAVERSE CITY — Phlebotomy Education Inc. has been teaching "The Art of Professional Blood Collecting" since 2000 and now is offering the program free to area veterans.

The 30-hour class meets at the Northwestern Michigan College University Center on Dendrinos Drive, off Cass Road. The next class starts Monday, Dec. 3.

Disability Network

TRAVERSE CITY — The Disability Network/Northern Michigan will hold an open house and Celebration of Community on Thursday, Dec. 6, from 4 to 6 p.m.

Enjoy hors d'oeuvres and music by Off Hours and learn about Disability Network's efforts. Those who need accommodations or an American Sign Language Interpreter should contact or call 922-0903, Ext. 12.

Dine out for BACN

Benzie County — The next "Dine Out" for Benzie Area Christian Neighbors is on Tuesday, Dec. 4, at Fusion Restaurant on Main Street, Frankfort, and The Road House at Top of the Hill, Benzonia. A portion of meal receipts will be donated to BACN for its food pantry.

Church women

Traverse City — Church Women United will host their Christmas gathering Thursday, Dec. 6.

The ecumenical group will meet from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Peninsula Bible Church on Fair Street off East Eighth Street. Attendees should bring a dish to share and table service for the luncheon and boxed or canned food for Christmas dinners for the needy. The women of Peninsula Bible Church will give the program.

Library open house

Traverse City — The East Bay Branch Library invites the community to a holiday open house on Thursday, Dec. 6.

The event from 6:30 to 8 p.m. will include music by classical guitarist Angelo Meli from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. and refreshments. The library is located at 1989 Three Mile Road. Call 922-2085 to learn more.

'Follow the Star'

Tustin — Center Lake Bible Camp invites the public to "Follow the Star" back in time to a live nativity.

The outdoor holiday program will be presented on the quarter hour from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Friday through Sunday, Dec. 7-9, at the bible camp, 15204 20 Mile Road. Walking is required and wagon rides will be available for those unable to walk. There also will be a free meal, children's crafts and family portraits.

Magic show

Petoskey — Angel Ambassadors will sponsor a magic show for children at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8, at the American Legion, 455 Bay St. Admission is free for children; donations from adults are appreciated.

The event will feature a performance by "The Magic Lady" Jania Taylor, food, prizes, balloon art and a silent auction for adults. Proceeds go to the Angel Ambassadors/Helping Meet the Needs Of Our Local Veterans and Their Families.

Sweet Shoppe

Grawn — Grawn United Methodist Church's Sweet Shoppe will be hosted from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8, at the church, 1260 W. Silver Lake Road.

Lunch will be available along with homemade cookies and candy, crafts, wreaths and the Kidz Christmas Shoppe. Attendees also can sign and write a message on Christmas/holiday cards that will be sent to U.S. troops.s
