TRAVERSE CITY — So you’ve grazed on Thanksgiving fare all day and passed out into a food coma on the first couch in sight. But how much effort will it really take to burn off those turkey day calories?
The average person will consume 4,500 calories and 229 grams of fat on Thanksgiving Day, according to the Calorie Control Council.
Actual counts depend on your menu, pre- and post-meal snacking habits, recipes and preparation methods, and gorging stamina.
You’re in for a serious effort to burn off the glut even if you consume about two-thirds of the average calorie count. So we’ve compiled a list of some of your favorite Thanksgiving foods and some activities that could help you preserve your waistline through the holiday season.
70 minutes of shoveling snow
The time you’d have to take clearing your walk for homebound guests, to burn off that roasted turkey (enough to equal 1 cup chopped or diced turkey, 238 calories).
30 minutes of downhill skiing
The time you’d have to take swishing down the slopes during local resorts’ Thanksgiving Day opening, to burn off a serving of mashed potatoes (1 cup, 237 calories). But you could top off all the activity with a 6 hour nap on the couch to work off that sweet potato casserole (about ½ cup, 287 calories). Yes, you burn calories even when you snooze.
30 minutes of brushing your teeth
The time you’d have to take giving your toothbrush a workout, to burn off a serving of cranberry sauce (½-inch thick slice, 86 calories) — and all the stains from dinner.
60 minutes of standing in line
The time you’d have to take loitering in line waiting for this year’s Christmas “gotta have” gift during Thanksgiving Day sales, to burn off a serving of green bean casserole (approximately 8 oz., 90 calories). But at least you’d have a head start on your shopping before Black Friday hits.
