ALDEN — Approximately 100 cars are expected to participate in the Alden Classic Sports Car Show today, Aug. 11.

Registration is from 9 a.m. to noon, with valve cover racing from 12:30 to 2 p.m. and awards presented at 3 p.m. Spectator admission is free. For details, visit

CHUM’S CORNER — The Traverse City Beach Bums vs. the Gateway Grizzlies baseball game today, Aug. 11, will have an early childhood theme titled “Go To Bat for Early Childhood.”

Families of children ages up to 5 can sign-in for free lawn seat tickets from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. at Wuerfel Park. The game starts at 5:05 p.m. There also will be free activities for young children. For details, contact Robin Hornkohl, 922-7863 or

Bird lecture, hike

TRAVERSE CITY — A lecture and a birding expedition will be held in conjunction with the Dennos Museum’s “Birds of Paradise: Amazing Avian Evolution” exhibit.

Saving Birds Thru Habitat (SBTH) will give an illustrated lecture at 2 p.m. today, Aug. 11, in the Janis Room on the migration and selection processes of northern Michigan birds.

SBTH Director Kay Charter will lead a birding expedition at 1 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 18, on Northwestern Michigan College’s main campus. Binoculars will be provided and all ages are welcome. Participants should meet in the Dennos Museum lobby, 1410 College Dr.

Both events are included with museum admission, which is $10 for adults; $5 for children, museum members and NMC students. For details or reservations, call 995-1029.

Jewelry party

FRANKFORT — Jewelry from artists in Mary’s Gift Gallery at the Oliver Art Center will be featured at a jewelry party from 2 to 4 p.m. today, Aug. 11. The Oliver Art Center is located at 132 Coast Guard Road. The public is invited.

Fun on River St.

ELK RAPIDS — Brett Mitchell and The Giant Ghost will provide the music for Evening on River Street from 6-9 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 14.
