TRAVERSE CITY —The non-denominational group Church Women and Men United on Thursday will host a talk from missionary Randi Clawson at the Christ United Methodist Church, 1249 Three Mile Rd. South in Traverse City.
The event is from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. and features a potluck lunch and a presentation from Clawson who recently returned from a mission trip to Palestine.

WILLIAMSBURG — Samels Farm will offer an introduction to blacksmithing on Sept. 21.
The hands-on program will be held from 8:30 a.m.-noon at the farm, 8298 Skegemog Point Road, off M-72. It will introduce basic blacksmithing skills and provide an early 1900s view of a farm blacksmith shop. All participants will make a hand-forged item to take home and should bring safety glasses if possible, older clothes and sensible shoes.

PESHAWBESTOWN — Classic Rock Experience featuring Midnight Special will perform at 9 p.m. Saturday, in the Sands Showroom at Leelanau Sands Casino and Lodge. The doors open at 8:30 p.m.

Red Cross training
TRAVERSE CITY — The American Red Cross will hold a volunteer overview training course for individuals interested in responding to local and national disasters.

Practice pirate talk
KALKASKA — The Kalkaska County Library, 247 S. Cedar St., invites everyone to a swashbuckling good time on International Talk Like A Pirate Day.
Activities will be hosted from 3:30-4:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 19. Participants can complete a scavenger hunt, wear a costume and win a prize, learn pirate talk, find out their pirate name and borrow books about pirates.
TRAVERSE CITY — Tickets are on sale for Mt. Holiday’s “Snowball” Black Tie and Tennis Shoe Dinner Dance.
The fall fundraiser will be hosted Sept. 21, at Mt. Holiday, 3100 Holiday Road. The doors open at 6 p.m. for a seated dinner, live and silent auctions and dancing to big band music by ReMix. Father Fred sale
TRAVERSE CITY — The Father Fred Foundation’s annual fall garage sale fundraiser will be held from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, at the foundation, 826 Hastings St. Proceeds benefit foundation programs and services for those in need in the five-county Grand Traverse area.
MANCELONA — The community is invited to celebrate autumn at a Harvest Dinner hosted by Mancelona United Methodist Church.
The family-style meal will be served in two seatings at 5 and 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 17, at the church, 117 E. Hinman. The cost is $10 for adults, $4 for children 5 and older and free for children 4 and younger. Proceeds benefit the Untied Methodist Women’s projects locally and globally.
Bay Film Series
SUTTONS BAY — Subscriptions are available for the Bay Film Series 2013-14 at the Bay Theatre.
The series opens Sunday through Tuesday with the French film “Renoir.” It continues with “Kon Tiki” Oct. 6-8; “Stories We Tell” Nov. 10-12; “Museum Hours” Dec. 8-10; “Wadjda” Jan. 12-14; and “The Rocket” Feb. 9-11. Two additional titles will be announced for March and April.
