Kids’ books sought

TRAVERSE CITY — The United Way of Northwest Michigan Volunteer Center is looking for new or gently used children’s books for its annual book drive.

The books will be given to children who attend the Volunteer Center’s second annual free Days of Action literacy celebration events scheduled in four surrounding counties in June. The goal is to encourage continued reading by families during the summer.

Book donations may be dropped off Monday through Friday, May 13-17, at any Traverse City Area Public Schools’ elementary school or the United Way of Northwest Michigan office, 521 S. Union St.

Wildflower walks

BELLAIRE — New this season, Grass River Natural Area will offer weekly wildflower walks.

Docent-led walks start at 10 a.m. each Tuesday, May 14 through Aug. 27, at the natural area, 6500 Alden Highway. The walks are free, but registration is required. For details or to register, call 533-8314 or visit www.grassriver.org.

Film and program

KALKASKA — The Kalkaska County library will sponsor two events on fracking.

“Gasland” will be shown at 9 and 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Thursday, May 16, at the library, 247 S. Cedar St. The documentary follows filmmaker Josh Fox on a cross-country trip to uncover the truth about fracking.

Jim Olson, local environmental law attorney and acting chair of F.L.O.W. (For Love Of Water), will visit the library from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 23, to discuss fracking and its possible consequences.

Reservations are not needed for either event and the public is welcome. For details, call the library, 258-9411.

Library book sale

KALKASKA — The Friends of the Kalkaska County Library will hold their annual Used Book Sale at the Kalkaska United Methodist Church, 2525 Beebe Road .

A pre-sale event for Friends members only will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. Friday, May 17. The sale will open to the public at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 18. For details, to volunteer at the sale or to learn more about the Friends group, call 587-1134.
