GMOs are theme

TRAVERSE CITY — Oryana Natural Foods Market, in partnership with No GM0 4 Michigan, will present a free community forum on Thursday, May 9, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Traverse Area District Library main branch.

The program is designed to spread awareness about Genetically Modified Organisms and their effects. The event will feature a documentary, “Genetic Roulette” by Jeffrey Smith, followed by a question-and-answer session with Diane Lalomia, president of NoGMO4Michigan.

There is no charge and the public is welcome. Snacks will also be provided.

Syrup-making

AUSTIN, TEXAS — A new book, “Maple on Tap: Making Your Own Maple Syrup,” has been written by Rich Finzer.

Living on a farm near Hannibal, New York, Finzer has been making his own maple syrup each spring for more than two decades. To save beginners time and money, Finzer offers step-by-step tips on each part of the process.

Food collection

TRAVERSE CITY — Mail carriers in most communities in Antrim, Benzie, Grand Traverse, Kalkaska and Leelanau counties will collect non-perishable food for the Northwest Food Coalition on Saturday, May 11. Participating carriers will leave a postcard about the drive. Homes receiving a card may leave bags of food near their mailboxes on that day.
