Needs forum

SUTTONS BAY — The Leelanau Democratic Party will host a non-partisan informational forum on how to help those in need in Leelanau County.

“Invisible Leelanau” will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 17, at the Leelanau County Government Center, 8527 E. Government Center Dr. Refreshments will be served at 6:30 p.m. Panel members are Cathy Anthofer, the Women’s Resource Center; Kathy Bartell from the Parenting Communities project; Jerry Shiffman and Jim Sills from the Empire Area Community Center Emergency Fund; Steve Wade from United Way of Northwest Michigan; Jo Ellen Walker from Blessings and Backpacks; and Tyrus Wessell from the Leelanau County Coordinating Council.

IAF lecture

TRAVERSE CITY — Tom Toomey will give a presentation titled “Afghan Youth: The Key to a Brighter Future” on Thursday, April 18, as part of the International Affairs Forum Lecture series.

Toomey has worked in international exchanges for 20 years, focusing on Afghanistan the past eight years. He is finishing a book about his experiences in Afghanistan.

The evening opens with a reception at 5:15 p.m., followed by the lecture at 6 p.m. in Milliken Auditorium at the Dennos Museum Center, 1410 College Dr. Tickets are $10 at the door; free for students and educators. For details, call 995-1700 or visit www.nmc.edu/iaf.

 

Book group meets

TRAVERSE CITY — Pageturners, Peninsula Community Library’s book group, will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 18, at the library, 2699 Island View Road, to discuss J. Courtney Sullivan’s “Maine.”

DAR honors

TRAVERSE CITY — The Job Winslow Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution will honor the winner and runner-up of their “Good Citizen” Scholarship Contest at their “Celebration of Youth Awards Day.”
