TRAVERSE CITY — B.A.R.K.s, Books and Reading for Kids, will offer young readers from kindergarten through third grade the chance to read to a trained therapy dog on Friday, July 12.

Each reader will be given a 15-minute time slot to read to Lacey, an 8-year-old Golden Retriever, between 10 and 11 a.m. at Horizon Books, 243 E. Front St. Appointments are required and can be made by calling 946-7290.

'Hit the Wall' exhibit

BEULAH — L'Chayim Delicatessen's second wine and cheese party for its next "Hit the Wall" exhibit will be held today, July 11.

From 5 to 7 p.m., visitors can meet local artist Parker Nugent, whose bold black and white posters and copper-etched prints are on display at the deli's Beulah location. For details, call 871-0601.

Concert for kids

TRAVERSE CITY — Local entertainer Miriam Pico will give a free concert for children Saturday, July 13, at the East Bay Branch Library, 1989 Three Mile Road.

Festival and dinner

LAKE LEELANAU — St. Mary of Lake Leelanau's Summer Festival & Chicken Dinner will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, July 14, in the village. The meal is $13 for adults and $8 for children ages 4 to 10.

Duct tape craft

TRAVERSE CITY — Teens and preteens are invited to craft a duct tape wallet with maps of underground transit systems from around the world.

Hymn sing

MANCELONA — Pastor Marv Rosa will conduct an old-fashioned hymn sing on Tuesday, July 16.

Pastor Rosa, accompanied by pianist Patti Dykehouse, will lead the singing starting at 6:15 p.m. at Mancelona United Methodist Church, 117 E. Hinman. Admission is free and the public is invited. For details, call 587-8461.

Claudia Schmidt performs

ELBERTA — Claudia Schmidt with special guest Dean Magraw will make an appearance on Wednesday, July 17, at the Cabbage Shed.

TRAVERSE CITY — Traverse City Central High School's class of 1957 will meet for lunch from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, July 18, at the Elks Club, 625 Bay St. All classmates are invited.

Basket class

BELLAIRE — Local basket maker Nancy Vanderwall will share her artistry in a basket class at Grass River Natural Area.

The class meets at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 18, at Grass River, 6500 Alden Highway. Participants will use natural materials from backyards and woods to weave a basket.

Preschool openings

CENTRAL LAKE — Central Lake Public Schools has openings in its 3- and 4-year-old preschool classrooms for the 2013-14 school year.

The kindergarten preparatory program is held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. four days a week. Tuition is free for Central Lake School District residents; $125 per month for out-of-district students. Bus transportation is provided.

Loon lookout trips

BELLAIRE — Registration is under way for Loon Lookout Family Pontoon Trips sponsored by Grass River Natural Area.

Pontoon cruises along Grass River will leave at 6 and 7:30 p.m. Friday, July 19, and 10 and 11:30 a.m. Saturday, July 20, from the natural area, 6500 Alden Highway. Participants should bring light jackets, sunscreen, binoculars, cameras and lifejackets for children younger than 12.

Twisted Fish exhibit

ELK RAPIDS — An exhibit of works by master painter Alan Maciag is on display at Twisted Fish Gallery.

Maciag's exhibit, "Landscape Views," features more than 50 new paintings in a colorful Michigan panorama of art.
