Former Static-X frontman returns to region

TRAVERSE CITY — It's not that far from Shelby to Traverse City, but Wayne Static has come a long way since his days of picking asparagus.

The former Static-X frontman will play Wednesday at Streeters GroundZero.

Fans of old-school Static-X's metal sound will get to hear the entire "Wisconsin Death Trip" album front to back. It's part of a 15th-anniversary tour of the album that produced three of the band's 11 Top 40 mainstream rock songs, including their biggest chart-topper, "Push It."

"It's very interesting because it starts out with all the songs that everybody knows 'Push It,' 'I'm With Stupid,' 'Bled for Days,' 'Love Dum' and then after that, it starts getting into the songs that only the hard-core fans know, all those B-side type songs. It'll be a big shift in the audience about halfway through the set."

Six or seven other songs from Static's repertoire will round out the show, he said.

Static, born Wayne Wells, lived in Muskegon until moving to Shelby at age 9. Shelby about an hour south of Manistee is where Static became a "band geek."

"I was second-chair trumpet. I could never get first chair. There was the one girl who was awesome and I could never beat."

Static worked on farms, picking asparagus and blueberries as a kid, and in a canning factory in high school.

"It's an agricultural area," Static said of Shelby. "That's about all there is to do there, really. You're got your three or four month tourist season at Silver Lake Sand Dunes, and other than that, you've got your agricultural stuff."

Static's parents live in the Muskegon area and will attend the Traverse City show, as they commonly do.
