Northern Notes: Gardeners encouraged to 'grow a row' for BACN

It might seem a bit early to be talking about gardening, but Benzie Area Christian Neighbors would like to plant the seed of an idea in the minds of area gardeners and ask them to consider growing an extra row for BACN this summer.

“We have worked on making the BACN pantry a more balanced diet,” a letter from BACN stated. “Gradually over the last two years we have increased the food budget in order to purchase onions, potatoes, carrots and fruits when in season. Occasionally eggs, meat and dairy are also available. This helps to balance what is donated during food drives and the cans and boxes of staples we normally stock.”

Families who have garden plots are being encouraged to grow carrots, peas, potatoes, onions, beets, lettuce, kale, beans, other vegetables, and fruits to donate at harvest time to the BACN pantry. For more information, call 882-9544.

Sue Ann Round and Margaret Emerick wrote to thank several local heroes for putting Michigan Artists Gallery back together after being closed for 45 days with flood damage.

“Jason Harrall and the crew from Boulder Builders, Larry Fox, Victor Dinsmoore and Matt Torres did a tremendous job in giving us a beautiful new look and rehab, while lifting our spirits,” Sue Ann and Margaret wrote. “Frozen pipes and hundreds of pieces of artwork do not mix well, but our recovery is complete and we welcome everyone to drop by and see our newly restored gallery in Suttons Bay.”

Girl Scout Troop 10037 held a party in April to pack Girl Scout cookies to ship to Michigan soldiers from National Guard Unit 1460, which is stationed in Afghanistan.

“Our Girl Scouts selected cookies for the troops as our gift of caring project,” said Troop Leader Venus Tondreau. “The gift of caring cookies are sold during the annual cookie sale and donated to a charitable cause.”
