Books in Brief: 05/11/2014

Speakers announced

BEULAH — The schedule of writers for this years “Off the Page” program, presented by the Darcy Library of Beulah and Benzonia Public, includes the author of the 2014 Great Michigan Read selection, two popular mystery writers, a memoirist, and a poet and literary speaker.

• Steve Luxenberg, author of “Annie’s Ghost: A Journey into a Family Secret,” chosen as the Great Michigan Read selection by the Michigan Humanities Council for 2014, at 7 p.m., Friday, May 23.

• Elizabeth Buzzelli, author of “A Tough Nut to Kill,” the first installment in the “Nuthouse” series, at 7 p.m., June 20.

• Fleda Brown, with her newest collection of poems, “No Need for Sympathy,” at 7 p.m., July 11.

• D.E. Johnson, author of “Detroit Shuffle,” will bring his Detroit-based historical mystery series to northern Michigan, at 7 p.m., Aug. 22.

• Teresa Irish speaks on her memoir entitled “A Thousand Letters Home,” based on 1,000 letters written by her father, Aarol “Bud” Irish from 1942 through 1945 while serving in World War II, at 7 p.m., Sept. 19.

Programs will take place at the Darcy Library, 7238 Commercial St. in Beulah.

A hospitality and book-signing session follow formal presentations. Programs are free with donations welcome. For more information, call the Darcy Library at 882-4037.

 

Author signings

TRAVERSE CITY — Horizon Books will host book signings by the following authors on Saturday, May 17:

• Kitty Bucholtz, author of “Unexpected Superhero,” 12 to 2 p.m.

• Wendy Webb, author of “The Vanishing,” 2 to 4 p.m.

Storytime day

TRAVERSE CITY — Horizon Books will host the first Storytime Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, May 17. Author Kate DiCamillo, the 2014–2015 National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature, invited fellow authors to participate by reading children’s stories aloud.

Bill Smith, author of “Chickadees at Night” and “Chickadee Spirit” will read from 10 to 11 a.m.; AnnieMarie Chiaverilla, author of “The Twelve Months of Michigan” will read stories from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Lynne Rae Perkins, author of “The Cardboard Piano” and other books will read from 1 to 2 p.m.
