Pruning workshop

GLEN ARBOR — Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore will hold a pruning workshop on Friday, May 2.

The workshop will meet from 1-4 p.m. at the Thoreson Farmstead on Thoreson Road. It will focus on maintenance of neglected apple and pear trees, how to bring them back into production and maintain their health. Participants will receive hands-on training.

Artist at Horizon

TRAVERSE CITY — Horizon Books will host artist D.B. Henkel during the downtown Art Walk on Friday, May 2.

Henkenl will visit the book store, 243 E. Front St., from 5-9 p.m. Henkel’s mural that was in ArtPrize 2013 in Grand Rapids and other work by Henkel will be on display. For details, call 946-7290, (800) 587-2147 or visit

Peepers program

TRAVERSE CITY — The Grand Traverse Conservation District’s Peepers preschool program continues through May 20.

The program for children ages 3-5 with an accompanying adult meets from 10-11:30 a.m. Tuesdays at the Boardman River Nature Center, 1450 Cass Road. The cost is $5 per child. For details or to register, call 941-0960 or visit

Hymn Sing

TRAVERSE CITY — Central United Methodist Church, 222 Cass St., will host its spring Hymn Sing on Sunday, May 4.

The Rev. Marv Rosa and the Cherry Blossom Ramblers will lead the singing starting at 7 p.m. at the church. Organist Tom Bara and pianist Byron Hanson will accompany the singing. An offering will be collected to benefit worldwide hunger and disaster relief efforts.

SUTTONS BAY — “A Place at the Table” will be shown on Sunday, May 4, as part of an effort to raise awareness of local hunger issues and to raise money for Leelanau Christian Neighbors, which operates Blessings in a Backpack and two local food banks.
