Poet’s Night Out

TRAVERSE CITY — The community is invited to celebrate National Poetry Month at the 17th annual Poet’s Night Out on Sunday, April 27.

The free event will start at 7 p.m. at the City Opera House, 106 E. Front St. The poetry contest and reading event showcases 25 area poets from a 10-county region selected by a jury. This year, selected poets range in age from middle school to retirees. Guests will have the chance to vote for audience favorites and the winners will receive prizes.

Pancake feast

EMPIRE — The Empire Lions Club will host its annual Pancake Feast on Sunday, April 27.

The meal will be served from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Empire Town Hall. The cost is $6 for adults, $3 for children ages 7 to 12 and free for children ages 6 and younger. Proceeds help fund local vision needs, college scholarships, local youth recreation programs, Leader Dog School, and sight, hearing and diabetes education and awareness programs.

Poet gives program

TRAVERSE CITY — Award-winning local poet Leland James will give a program titled “Reading and Appreciating Poetry.”

James will offer keys to understanding poetry and address the poet in context at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 30, at the Traverse Area District Library, 610 Woodmere Ave. The program is free and open to the public. For details, visit

Mission breakfast

ACME — The Knights of Columbus Council #9979 of Christ the King Catholic Church will host their annual Jamaican Mission Breakfast on Sunday, April 27.

The meal will be served after both the 9 and 11 a.m. Masses at the church, 3801 Shore Road. A minimum $8 donation per person is suggested. Proceeds provide direct financial support to both high school and college students for education and to schools and parish priests to help in their overall education missions.
