NWS author presentation

TRAVERSE CITY — The National Writers Series presents international bestselling author Anchee Min at 7 p.m., April 24, at the City Opera House.

The Chinese-born novelist authored a number of acclaimed books, including her memoir “Red Azalea” — a New York Times Notable Book of the Year.

Ticket prices are: $20 general admission, $25 reserved, and $35 premium reserved. A $17 copy of “The Cooked Seed” is available with tickets, and educator and student discounts are available with valid identification. The event is presented in partnership with the International Affairs Forum’s 2014 focus on China.

CD release party

TRAVERSE CITY — Claudia Schmidt will celebrate 40 years in music and the release of her new CD on Red House Records titled “New Whirled Order” with a concert at Sleder’s Family Tavern.

Schmidt will perform at 4 p.m. on April 27 at Sleder’s, 717 Randolph St. Advance tickets are $15 each at the tavern, Oryana Natural Foods Market, Brilliant Books, Zamar Guitar, or by calling Sleder’s, 947-9213. Tickets are $20 at the door.

Fairy Garden Fun

TRAVERSE CITY — The young and the young-at-heart are invited to a Fairy Garden Fun seminar at Garden Goods, 3510 N. U.S. 31 South.

Robin Smillie will discuss all things fairy while building a fairy garden starting at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 19. The seminar is free, but registration is required. Registration may be done with the Garden Goods front desk staff or by calling 933-4769.

‘Green Fire’ screening

LELAND — The Leelanau Conservancy and the Leelanau Conservation District will host a free screening of the full-length documentary “Green Fire.”

The film will be shown at 7 p.m. on Earth Day, Tuesday, April 22, at the Old Art Building, 111 Main St. It tells the story of legendary conservationist Aldo Leopold and his environmental legacy. For details, visit or call 256-9665.
