Northern Notes: Restaurant does 'right thing' for Kalkaska residents

Phil and Lois McCombs of Kalkaska County visited the Wendy’s restaurant on Division Street in Traverse City last month. When they arrived home six hours later, Lois McCombs said she realized she had a “senior moment” when she failed to collect $14 in change from the restaurant. She called the manager, Mike, who made arrangements to mail the money to her.

“In these days of questionable customer service, it is nice to know there are folks out there that care enough to do the right thing,” said Phil McCombs.

The American Red Cross of Northwest Michigan would like to thank community members, organizations and businesses who supported the 2014 Heroes Campaign.

“The people, businesses, and organizations who participated are truly heroes in Northwest Michigan and we are so grateful that they see the importance of the Red Cross presence in our community,” said Todd Nienhouse, chair for the 2014 Heroes Campaign and Red Cross of Northwest Michigan board member.

The campaign raised more than $20,000 from April 21-May 21 through online donating and special events including Red Wine for Red Cross, the 5K Fun Run at Cherry Knoll Elementary and donation drives at grocery stores. All of the money raised will go towards disaster services in Grand Traverse, Leelanau, Kalkaska and Benzie counties.

Joining to put free and subsidized food in the hands of local residents, a diverse coalition of northern Michigan community organizations have thrown their support behind the food outreach programs of Bluestem Farm in East Jordan.

“As farmers, we believe in the importance of good food, but we are also aware that it can cost more, which puts it out of reach for too many households. We’ve been working hard to make our food affordable for all,” said farm owner Mary Brower.

A Community Supported Agriculture program offered by the farm allows families to purchase farm shares, then receive regular food disbursements.
