Experience belly dance at upcoming events

TRAVERSE CITY — Experience belly dance in its many forms with two upcoming events.

On Saturday, Mar. 9, local Tribal Fusion duo, Raks Incendia, is hosting a Bollywood dance workshop and World Fusion Dance Showcase.

The workshop features Grand Rapids-based Na’imah, award-winning Bollywood performer and founder of the Anandani Dancers, a troupe dedicated to bringing favorite Bollywood (Hindi movie) hits to the stage.

Na’imah studied her chosen dance in India and has performed and taught throughout the Midwest.

She will be teaching two sessions at the workshop: Bollywood 101 from 11a.m. to 1p.m., and Bollywood Choreography from 2 to 4 p.m.

Designed for all levels of dance experience, the workshop will be held at Crystal Bindi Studios, 2062 South Airport Rd. in Logan’s Landing. Registration is $40 per class or $70 for both.

Following the workshop is the World Fusion Dance Showcase at the Children’s House Montessori School off N. Long Lake Rd. in Traverse City. Belly dance troupes from all corners of Michigan will be performing a spectrum of Middle Eastern and Western fusion dance styles, including Raks Incendia and the Jewel Jigglers, Traverse City’s native belly dance groups.

Doors open at 7:30p.m. and the show starts at 8. Tickets are $15 in advance or $18 at the door.
