Northern Notes: 'PigstockTC' launches meal program

(Continued)

This past Christmas season, Michelle Herban’s fourth-grade class at Betsie Valley Elementary School collected personal care products and cash donations for BACN. Students who led the drive were Tyler Joan, Aidan Johnston, Emma Jones, Halle Kalosky, Abby Mishler, Gavyn Sanchez and Savannah Warner.

The “Honor Your Neighbor” food drive, sponsored by the Benzonia Branch of Honor Bank, raised cash and food donations totaling more than $2,000.

Eight Benzie Central Middle School students counted and prepared 10,000 newsletters for BACN. The students, members of the middle school’s Kiwanis Builder’s Club, included Katlyn Cress, Riley Burns, Abigail Smith, Alexis Smith, Kristen Smith, Leah Stapleton, Lindsay Smith and Lauren Church.

Oryana Natural Foods of Traverse City recently sent a check for $37.87 to BACN.

The amount was determined by how many colored beans patrons chose to place in the BACN jar at the check out. Beans are awarded based on the patron’s decision to not use a plastic or paper grocery bag from the store, which saves Oryana 10 cents per shopper. Oryana chooses three charities each month to support. Beans and cash contributions are added at month’s end and forwarded to the charities.
