Genealogy demo

Empire — The Glen Lake Community Library will host a demonstration of a new genealogy database today, Jan. 22.

Ancestry Library Edition provides access to millions of digitized records and the database can be used on any of the library's public computers.

The demonstration will start at 7 p.m. Registration is requested; call 326-5361 or email info@glenlakelibrary.net.

Newcomers meet

Traverse City — Karen Schmidt, president of the Board of Trustees of the Botanical Garden Society of Northwest Michigan, will be the guest speaker today, Jan. 22, at a meeting of the Newcomers Club of Grand Traverse.

Schmidt will discuss the new botanical gardens at the Grand Traverse Commons during the 7 p.m. meeting at the History Center of Traverse City, 322 Sixth St. The public is invited. For details, visit www.gtnewcomers.org.

Basketball party

Frankfort — The MSU Alumni Club of Benzie County invites basketball fans to join them for the MSU vs. Wisconsin game today, Jan. 22,

The alumni basketball watch party will start at 7 p.m. at the Villa Marine Bar and Grill. Admission is free, but donations will be accepted for the scholarship fund. For details, contact Tina Clark, 352-6049 or akoclark@att.net.

TCAPS orientations

Traverse City — Parents and students in or entering middle school are invited to orientation meetings designed to share information on grade specific curriculum and elective opportunities available in the 2013-14 school year.

West Middle School, 3950 Silver Lake Road, will hold orientation for parents of students entering sixth grade tonight, Jan. 22. Parent orientation for students entering seventh or eighth grades will be held Thursday, Jan. 24. For details including times and locations, call the school, 933-8200.

East Middle School, 1776 Three Mile Road, will hold grade core curriculum meetings and electives fairs on Thursday, Jan. 24, for students entering sixth through eighth grades. For details including times and locations, call the school, 933-7300.
