Wild winter weekends

ROYAL OAK — The Detroit Zoo is offering Wild Winter weekends through March.

The eighth annual series of family-friendly events feature children's music, zookeeper talks, games and crafts.

Wild Winter African Adventure runs Feb. 9 and 10 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Celebrate Black History Month with an African drum lesson and listen to stories told by Kenyan naturalist and Detroit Zoo Education Specialist David Gakure. Other attractions include live entertainment, arts and crafts, games and educational experiences.

Wild Winter Safari Social is March 9 and 10 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Ice cream and hot cocoa will be available for purchase at a discount. Animal arts and crafts, face painting, animal enrichment activities, zookeeper talks and a winter safari scavenger hunt add to the fun.

Comic-Con coming

GRAND RAPIDS — The first Grand Rapids Comic-Con will be held in Wyoming on Saturday, Oct. 12.

The show will feature a huge vending room selling comic books, anime/manga, movie memorabilia, action figures, toys and more. Five to six nationally known comic book artists and/or creators who have worked for the likes of DC Comics, Marvel Comics and other national publishers will be on hand. There will also be an "Artist Alley" featuring a selection of independent comic artists representing the best from the Midwest, along with a gaming room and film festival.

Disney at Palace

AUBURN HILLS — Disney On Ice presents "Dare to Dream" at The Palace of Auburn Hills March 14-17.

'Book of Mormon'

DETROIT — Tickets go on sale Jan. 18 at 10 a.m. for "The Book of Mormon" at the Fisher Theatre.

Winner of nine Tony Awards including Best Musical, the national tour will stop in Detroit March 12-24.

GRAND RAPIDS — Individual tickets for Gilda's LaughFest, a community-wide festival of laughter, are now on sale.

Highlights include Garfunkel and Oates; the Clean Comedy Showcase; the Out of the Box Comedy Show with comedian Hen Sapp and guests; the Don't We Boys & Charles nationally touring sketch comedy groups; "Forever Plaid" comedic musical revue; Giggle Groove walking tour of bars and restaurants; MP Talent Showcase with an evening of comedy, music, burlesque, puppetry and more; Francesca Amari with "A Love Song to Gilda Radner"; "Seriously Funny Adventure Challenge" involving teams racing through downtown Grand Rapids engaging in timed challenges requiring fast thinking; and a stand-up comedy competition.
